CSA/ANSI/IGSHPA C448

The Canadian design and installation standard for ground source heat pump systems. Ask every bidder whether they design to it, and which edition they mean.

What it is

CSA/ANSI/IGSHPA C448 Series:25Design and installation of ground source heat pump systems for commercial and residential buildings. A joint Canadian, American and International Ground Source Heat Pump Association standard running to roughly 250 pages.

The 2025 edition replaced the 2017 version and is the basis for current IGSHPA training.

What the 2025 edition added

  • A district energy systems section
  • Energy foundations and energy piles — loops built into structural elements
  • An annex on waste water energy transfer systems
  • PE-RT as a piping material
  • Additional heat transfer fluids, including glycerin-based antifreeze and detoxified ethylene glycol

The direction of travel is worth noting: the standard is expanding to cover the commercial and district-scale applications where this technology is actually growing, rather than the single-family systems it was once mostly about.

Why it protects you commercially

The question to ask

"Do you design to CSA C448, and which edition?"

It costs you ten seconds and it will separate your bidders faster than any other question on your list. A contractor who designs to the standard will answer immediately and tell you the year. One who does not will talk about experience instead.

The reason this matters more here than on other trades is the failure mode. An undersized loop field works perfectly at commissioning and for several seasons afterwards. There is no defect to point at, no warranty claim to make, and by the time capacity falls short the contractor may be long gone and the remedy is a second drilling programme on an occupied building.

Designing to a published standard is what converts "trust us" into something a specification can require and an owner can enforce.

How to use it in a specification

If you are writing or reviewing a tender for a geothermal system, requiring compliance with CSA/ANSI/IGSHPA C448 — naming the edition — costs nothing and removes an entire category of bidder who should not be pricing the work.

Pair it with a requirement for a thermal conductivity test on the loop field and you have covered the two ways these projects most commonly go wrong.

Common questions

Is complying with C448 a legal requirement?

It is a standard rather than a regulation, so it applies when a specification or contract requires it. That is precisely why naming it in your tender is worth doing — it turns good practice into a contractual obligation.

What if a contractor says the standard does not apply to my project?

The scope covers commercial and residential ground source systems. If a bidder is arguing their way out of it rather than confirming compliance, that is itself informative.
